Story as posted in 'ICCC Seniors' Facebook Group -- Narrated in first person by the Batras:

"I was one of 15 students from India that received a merit-based scholarship to continue my studies in the United States. In 1964, I left India and went to Honolulu to pursue a Master of Science degree at the University of Hawaii. Although I had to leave my wife and young son, it was an incredible opportunity that I knew would provide long-term benefit to my family. Following my master's degree, I continued on to the University of Illinois to pursue a Ph.D. in Animal Genetics. By God’s Grace and some hard work as well, all of my studies and associated expenses were fully paid by scholarships. Having had academic success abroad, I wanted to enter the workforce and was offered a position at the University of Guelph in Canada, where our daughter was born. Although the idea of returning to India weighed heavily on me, I knew that for my family, and future generations, there would be a greater benefit to staying abroad. Our family finally settled in Ottawa and I spent my career working as a Senior Research Scientist with Agriculture Canada. Our son obtained his Ph.D., and our daughter obtained her B.A. at the University of Ottawa."

"After moving to Canada, I focused on raising my children and worked in a number of areas including education and as a diamond consultant for a national corporation. It has been my faith in God, my family and my community that has guided me over the years. We are blessed to live in such a wonderful society, and as we are in our “Golden Years” it is a great time to reflect and give back to our community. My favorite memories have to do with spending time with my family, friends and our community. Many of us spend the winter together in Florida and our local bonds are very strong. We will live a simple and faith-based life and truly appreciate being part of the ICCC community."

"The lessons we learned from our parents, we pass on to our children and grandchildren. Work hard, be humble and make important contributions to your family and society. Volunteer your time to help others, always trust in God and know that there is a solution to every problem."
